SoftBank Corp has joined five Japanese companies in a government-backed research project designed to bring quantum computing and artificial intelligence closer to industrial materials development. The companies announced the project on Wednesday, October 28, after their joint proposal was selected by Japan's New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization, or NEDO. SoftBank's press release said the consortium will work from fiscal 2026 through fiscal 2028.
Quantum computing moves toward industrial use
The consortium includes TOPPAN Holdings, AISIN, Asahi Kasei, SoftBank, AGC and DIC. Its aim is to build a materials development platform that combines quantum-computing calculations with machine learning and other artificial intelligence methods.
The project will test applications in several industrial fields, including materials for next-generation batteries, optical materials for displays and sensors, and superconducting materials for future devices. The companies also plan to synthesize materials based on simulation results and compare laboratory measurements with those predictions. That feedback is intended to improve the platform's predictive accuracy over time.
SoftBank's role centers on computing infrastructure
SoftBank will operate a computing platform linking quantum computers with supercomputers. The company will use that infrastructure to generate data for materials research, develop AI-based data utilization technologies and demonstrate optimization methods in areas such as energy-related materials.
The announcement frames the project as a response to two limits in current materials research: AI-based methods need large volumes of high-quality training data, while physics-based simulations become more expensive as accuracy and scale increase. The consortium expects a combined quantum, conventional-computing and AI approach to help address those constraints. The release does not provide financial targets or forecast revenue from the project, so its immediate effect on SoftBank's earnings remains unclear.
