- Third-quarter adjusted earnings beat the Wall Street estimate as electricity demand and large-customer growth strengthened results.
- Southern Company raised its 2026 adjusted earnings forecast while maintaining its 2028 target range.
- Higher operating costs and financing needs remain key issues for the utility's investment plans.
Southern Company reported stronger third-quarter results on Thursday, November 5, 2026, as higher electricity demand, customer growth and large commercial and industrial accounts lifted earnings. The company also raised its full-year adjusted earnings outlook, giving investors a more constructive operating signal despite continuing capital demands.
Demand improves across the system
Adjusted earnings reached 1.94 US dollars per share, above the 1.71 US dollars expected by Wall Street, according to Benzinga. Operating revenue rose 13 percent year over year to 8.843 billion US dollars, topping the cited 8.359 billion US dollar consensus estimate.
Total electricity sales increased 7.3 percent to 60.79 billion kilowatt-hours. Weather-adjusted commercial sales rose 7.3 percent, while the regulated utility customer base grew 0.7 percent to nearly 9 million in September.
Guidance moves higher
Southern Company raised its 2026 adjusted earnings forecast to 4.70 US dollars per share from a previous range of 4.50 to 4.60 US dollars. The new outlook is above the 4.59 US dollar analyst estimate. The company kept its 2028 adjusted earnings forecast at 5.25 to 5.45 US dollars per share.
The near-term outlook is not uniformly stronger: Southern expects fourth-quarter adjusted earnings of 0.30 US dollars per share, below the 0.45 US dollar Wall Street estimate. Higher operating costs, access to capital and the scale of future generation and transmission investment remain important considerations for investors.
