- Trefis attributes most of Steel Dynamics stock's five-year gain to a higher earnings multiple and share repurchases rather than sales growth alone.
- Third-quarter revenue rose 34.8 percent year over year, while record steel shipments and a stronger joists and deck backlog support the operating outlook.
- The next major company update is expected with the January 2027 results.
Steel Dynamics stock faces a valuation question after a powerful five-year advance, as Trefis examined how much of the gain came from business growth and how much came from market re-rating. The analysis was published Tuesday, November 3, 2026.
Trefis said Steel Dynamics generated 22.2 billion US dollars in sales over the twelve months to September 30, 2026, compared with 15.7 billion US dollars over the comparable period five years earlier. That 41.5 percent increase explained less than one quarter of the stock's rise over the period, according to the analysis.
Multiple expansion led the advance
The Trefis review attributed most of the increase to a higher price-to-earnings multiple and a smaller diluted share count. The multiple rose from 5.2 at the end of September 2021 to 18.5 on November 2, 2026, while the diluted share count fell from 204 million to 144 million after buybacks.
The analysis also highlighted a counterpoint for investors in the cyclical steel producer: net margin narrowed from 14.7 percent to 8.8 percent over the same five-year period. Trefis said the margin remained below its ten-year high of 19.8 percent, reached in the twelve months to June 30, 2022.
Steel Dynamics stock traded at 225.30 euros on Lang & Schwarz at 14:02 CET on Tuesday, November 3, 2026. Investors can follow the real-time quote of Steel Dynamics stock.
Operating momentum remains important
Trefis pointed to stronger recent operating performance as a factor for the next phase of the investment case. Third-quarter fiscal 2026 revenue increased 34.8 percent from a year earlier, while management said on the October 20 earnings call that steel shipments reached a record 3.8 million tons. The company also reported stronger demand in its steel joists and deck business, with an order backlog above the prior-year level.
For the shares to repeat their previous five-year advance without further help from margins, valuation or the share count, Trefis calculated that sales would need to grow 33.2 percent annually. The analysis said the next yearly sales figure to watch will come with the company's next report, expected in January 2027.
Trefis said the valuation multiple and margin trajectory will remain important for investors assessing whether operating growth can support the current market view.
