Swiss Re stock advanced as a senior executive warned that falling US commercial property rates have not reduced the underlying insurance risk. The comments add a new underwriting-discipline angle to the investment case for Swiss Re.
Insurance Business reported on October 28 that Monica Ningen, Swiss Re's chief executive for US property and casualty reinsurance, sees the recent market softening as a mismatch between pricing and technical risk. US commercial property rates fell for a second consecutive quarter, while abundant capacity and a quiet Atlantic hurricane season weighed on premiums.
Marsh's Global Insurance Market Index showed US commercial property rates declining 10 percent in the third quarter of 2026 after a 13 percent drop in the second quarter. Ningen said the loss potential transferred through insurance does not change as quickly as supply and demand. Swiss Re estimates that global insured natural-catastrophe losses are growing 5 to 7 percent a year in real terms.
What has changed since our last report
Swiss Re has capital and capacity to write more business, but Ningen said decisions will be made client by client and treaty by treaty when the economics are attractive. That stance keeps underwriting quality and exposure assessment at the center of the outlook as lower premiums compete with rising asset values and shifting hazard patterns.
Swiss Re stock traded at EUR 166.88 on Lang & Schwarz at 17:14 Berlin time on Friday, October 30, 2026. That was 2.16 percent above the EUR 163.35 quote recorded at 16:45:34 Berlin time in the previous report on October 29, based on the same euro quotation.
