- Swiss Re increased nine-month net income by 3% year on year to USD 4.2 billion.
- Management kept its USD 4.5 billion full-year profit target despite competitive property and casualty pricing.
- Life and health reinsurance and disciplined underwriting supported the result, while new-business margins weakened.
Swiss Re reported stronger earnings for the first nine months of 2026 on Thursday, November 5. In its nine-month results release, the reinsurer said net income reached USD 4.2 billion, up 3% from the same period a year earlier.
Profit growth meets full-year target
Swiss Re said the result benefited from contributions across all business units, lower-than-expected natural catastrophe losses and solid investment income. Return on equity remained at 22.5%, while the insurance service result increased to USD 5.1 billion from USD 4.8 billion.
Management maintained its full-year 2026 net income target of USD 4.5 billion. The company also said it remained on track to reduce operating costs by USD 500 million by 2028, after raising the savings ambition earlier this year.
Pricing pressure shapes the mix
Property and casualty reinsurance generated USD 2.2 billion in nine-month net income, 6% below the prior-year period. Its combined ratio nevertheless improved to 77.3% from 77.6%, and the business unit kept its full-year target below 85%.
Life and health reinsurance provided a counterweight, with net income rising to USD 1.5 billion from USD 1.1 billion. Swiss Re attributed the performance in part to favourable US mortality experience. At group level, however, new-business contractual service margin fell to USD 2.8 billion from USD 3.9 billion, reflecting competitive property and casualty renewals, lower volumes and fewer large transactions.
Swiss Re stock traded at EUR 165.58 on Lang & Schwarz at 18:09 CET on Friday, November 6, 2026.
For investors, the next scheduled strategic milestone is the presentation of Swiss Re's 2027 financial targets on December 4, 2026. The company also reported an estimated Swiss Solvency Test ratio of 259% as of October 1, above its target range of 200% to 250%.
