Swiss Re reported stronger earnings for the first nine months of 2026, with net income rising 3 percent year on year to USD 4.2 billion. In its November 5 press release, the Zurich-based reinsurer also said it remained on track for its 2026 financial targets.

Return on equity was 22.5 percent, unchanged from the prior-year period. The insurance service result increased to USD 5.1 billion from USD 4.8 billion, while insurance revenue declined 3 percent to USD 31.2 billion. Swiss Re attributed the earnings performance to strong contributions from all business units, lower-than-expected natural catastrophe losses and a solid investment result.

Portfolio discipline offsets softer pricing

Property and Casualty Reinsurance generated USD 2.2 billion of net income, down 6 percent from the comparable period. Its combined ratio improved to 77.3 percent from 77.6 percent, remaining comfortably below the business unit's full-year target of less than 85 percent. Revenue fell to USD 12.8 billion as renewals and reduced volumes written by cedents weighed on the business.

The segment's new business contractual service margin fell to USD 1.8 billion from USD 2.5 billion. Swiss Re said the decline reflected a competitive pricing environment. Chief Executive Officer Andreas Berger described the group's approach as disciplined underwriting combined with selective growth, while Chief Financial Officer Anders Malmstrom highlighted portfolio management and cost efficiency.

Life and Health Reinsurance was the strongest growth contributor. Net income climbed 43 percent to USD 1.5 billion, supported by the large in-force portfolio and favorable US mortality experience. The unit's insurance service result rose to USD 1.6 billion from USD 1.1 billion, and management expects it to reach its 2026 net income target of USD 1.7 billion.

Capital and targets remain central

Corporate Solutions increased net income 3 percent to USD 714 million, while its combined ratio improved to 86.4 percent from 87.1 percent. Swiss Re said its estimated Group Swiss Solvency Test ratio stood at 259 percent on October 1, above the target range of 200 to 250 percent.

The group reaffirmed its 2026 net income target of USD 4.5 billion. It also said its USD 1.5 billion share buyback programme was nearly complete and that it remained on track to reduce operating costs by USD 500 million by 2028. The next scheduled company milestone is the presentation of its 2027 financial targets on December 4, followed by full-year results on February 26, 2027.

The real-time quote of Swiss Re stock stood at EUR 167.70 on Lang & Schwarz at 11:13 CET on Friday, November 6, 2026.

For investors, the results reinforce Swiss Re's earnings diversification, but the weaker P&C revenue and lower new business margin point to pressure from softer market pricing. The strong capital position and progress toward the cost target provide support, while the next renewals cycle remains an important test for underwriting discipline.
