- Telefónica and Minsait will connect banks, fintech companies and payment providers within the future digital euro ecosystem.
- The planned infrastructure combines private communications networks, cybersecurity and technology integration services.
- The project strengthens Telefónica's business-to-business technology profile but does not mean that the digital euro has been issued.
Telefónica and Minsait have been selected by the European Central Bank as one of two successful tenderers for the communications and security infrastructure supporting a future digital euro. Telefónica announced the selection on October 30, 2026, in its press release.
Telefonica stock traded at 3.35 euros on Lang & Schwarz at 11:09 CET on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, 0.30 percent above the Xetra close of Tuesday, November 3. The quote places the stock close to the recent 3.34-euro Xetra reference while investors assess the group's technology and connectivity activities.
Infrastructure Award Extends B2B Technology Reach
The consortium will design and deploy networks and related solutions for the ECB, linking public and private intermediaries involved in the digital currency. The planned network is intended to connect banks, fintech companies and payment service providers so that businesses and consumers can exchange information and access services securely.
The contract is scheduled to enter into force on May 3, 2027, and will run for ten years. Telefónica will provide communications infrastructure and operate it through business units including Telefónica Global Solutions and Telefónica Tech. Its responsibilities are expected to include an MPLS network, SD-WAN capabilities and cybersecurity services.
Minsait, an Indra Group company, will contribute application and system integration through APIs, as well as digital identity solutions, certificates and trust services. Its cybersecurity capabilities will include a Security Operations Center designed to detect and respond to threats, support access control and protect communications between platform applications.
Strategic Relevance Comes Before Revenue Detail
For Telefónica, the award reinforces the role of connectivity, cybersecurity and technology integration alongside traditional fixed and mobile services. The company described the project as part of its effort to support a more digital, secure and sovereign Europe. Minsait's participation adds payment systems and digital identity expertise to the consortium.
The award is strategically relevant, but the announcement does not provide a revenue contribution or margin target for Telefónica. It also concerns the infrastructure for a potential future digital euro rather than a decision that the currency will enter circulation. The ECB project therefore gives investors a technology milestone, while the financial impact will depend on implementation and the eventual use of the platform.
