Virgin Media O2's restructuring has added a fresh test for Telefónica's UK exposure. Business Matters reported on November 3 that the jointly owned operator plans to reduce staff costs by 30 percent and targets 800 million pounds in annual savings by 2029.

Pressure reaches Telefónica's UK venture

Virgin Media O2 lost 23,300 broadband customers and 49,800 mobile customers in the third quarter, according to the report. Service revenue fell 3.5 percent to 2.04 billion pounds, while adjusted EBITDA declined 2.6 percent to 995.2 million pounds on a basis adjusted for the Daisy transaction.

The operator also plans to stop upgrading its cable network to fibre. Its fibre footprint reaches 9.4 million homes, while discussions with BT's Openreach could expand wholesale access outside its own network. The changes reflect intense competition from BT and smaller alternative networks.

Debt keeps the focus on execution

Virgin Media O2's net debt stood at about 5.6 times adjusted earnings at the end of September, and the venture employs about 16,000 people. Reuters Breakingviews described the operation as carrying a 22 billion pound debt pile while profitability falls. For Telefónica investors, successful cost reductions could support the UK venture, but the operating changes also underline the financial and competitive risks.

Telefónica's January-September results are scheduled for November 12 and should show how management assesses the British exposure alongside group performance.
