- TSMC is assessing rare-earth-free motors for automated factory equipment as China controls exports of selected minerals, magnets and processing technology.
- The equipment review remains preliminary, with no broad deployment of alternative machinery reported.
- Taiwan plans a pilot rare-earth technology line intended to meet about half of domestic demand within three years.
TSMC is assessing whether factory-automation equipment can use motors without rare-earth components, adding a new supply-chain issue for the worldâs largest contract chipmaker. The review remains preliminary and has not led to broad deployment of alternative equipment.
Equipment Review Targets Supply Risk
Lianhe Zaobao reported on October 29 that TSMC is seeking alternatives for equipment components to reduce its exposure to possible disruptions in rare-earth supplies from mainland China. The report said TSMC had asked suppliers about the feasibility of rare-earth-free motors for factory automation.
Rare-earth magnets are used in motors that move parts of highly automated industrial equipment. A shortage of specialised components could affect chip production for smartphones, artificial intelligence systems, data centres and defence applications. For TSMC, the immediate issue is preparedness rather than a reported production stoppage.
China Controls Keep Pressure High
China placed selected rare-earth minerals, magnets and processing technologies under export controls last year, requiring exporters to obtain licences. Beijingâs Taiwan Affairs Office said the measures regulate exports rather than ban them, while disputing the portrayal of the controls as a threat to supply chains.
Taiwan is also pursuing domestic alternatives. Economic Affairs Minister Kung Ming-hsin said in February that the government would support the Industrial Technology Research Institute in developing rare-earth technologies. A planned pilot production line is expected to meet about 50 percent of Taiwanâs demand within three years.
