- The talks also covered driver earnings, vehicle eligibility, airport operations and the withdrawal of Uber Share.
- Uber's next quarterly results are scheduled for November 4, keeping marketplace economics and driver relations in focus.
Uber rejected a proposal to temporarily reduce the commission it retains from UK private-hire journeys, according to TaxiPoint. The report, published on Thursday, October 29, said the decision followed Uber's third-quarter meeting with the GMB union on October 27.
Commission Dispute Keeps Driver Economics In Focus
GMB had asked for a temporary 5% commission reduction or an equivalent rebate, arguing that higher fuel costs were weighing on private-hire drivers. The union said Uber instead pointed representatives toward fuel discounts available through its Uber Pro Card.
GMB also said Uber maintained that a passenger fuel surcharge could reduce the number of journeys offered through the platform. Union representatives challenged that view, saying other operators and authorities had introduced temporary measures without the demand impact Uber described.
The discussions extended beyond fuel costs. GMB raised concerns about declining driver earnings, unpaid travel on long-distance journeys and different payment offers for the same journey. According to the union, Uber's preferred response was to increase completed trips, while GMB argued that more journeys would not necessarily improve hourly earnings if drivers had to work longer for the same income.
Operational Changes Add To Marketplace Watch
The meeting also covered vehicle eligibility changes affecting Uber Comfort and Executive drivers. GMB said Uber would not reverse a retrospective change despite objections from drivers who had already invested in qualifying vehicles. Uber agreed to further meetings on operational issues at Manchester and Birmingham airports, according to the report.
GMB further said Uber was preparing minor changes to waiting-time fees during the week beginning October 26, although it did not disclose the revised rates. The union also confirmed that Uber Share had stopped operating after complaints about shared-ride payments, passenger disputes and drivers' ability to decline additional bookings.
