- A Swiss parliamentary proposal could reduce the additional capital burden UBS faces for its foreign subsidiaries.
- UBS plans to complete its USD 3 billion share repurchase program with its fourth-quarter results.
- The Credit Suisse integration is nearing completion after job cuts in London.
UBS Group stock traded at 43.04 euros on Lang & Schwarz at 12:41 CET on Saturday, November 7. The week brought two strategic developments for Switzerland's largest bank: a parliamentary proposal that could soften the impact of tougher capital rules and new job cuts as the Credit Suisse integration nears completion.
Capital proposal changes the debate
A proposal in Switzerland's lower house would allow more conservative valuations of UBS's foreign subsidiaries when calculating the additional equity capital required at the parent bank. Swissinfo, citing Bloomberg, reported that the approach could reduce the additional requirement currently estimated at USD 16 billion. The proposal remains at an early parliamentary stage.
The Economic Affairs and Taxation Committee of the lower house is scheduled to discuss the matter on November 23 and 24. The legislative process keeps capital allocation and future shareholder returns in focus, while the eventual rule remains unsettled.
Integration delivers further cuts
UBS has cut about 200 positions in London in recent weeks as the Credit Suisse integration approaches its final phase. The reductions affected wealth management and investment banking, with some employees offered other roles inside the bank, according to Moneycontrol.
The cuts underline the operational savings potential from completing the takeover, but they also keep execution and staff-reduction risks relevant for investors. UBS's combined workforce had fallen by about 18% from the level reached after the Credit Suisse rescue acquisition, the report said.
Buyback remains linked to capital outlook
In its third-quarter results, UBS said it intends to complete its USD 3 billion share repurchase program when it reports fourth-quarter results. The bank also said the pace of future buybacks would depend on its financial performance, its target capital ratio and visibility on the Swiss Parliament's deliberations over foreign-subsidiary capitalization. For investors, the parliamentary timetable is therefore central to the balance between capital retention, returns and buybacks.
