Universal Music Group reported stronger subscription momentum and improved core profitability for the third quarter on Thursday, October 29. In its results release, the company said revenue reached 3.394 billion euros, up 12.3 percent year over year and 11.7 percent at constant currency.

Recorded Music subscription revenue rose 19.2 percent at constant currency, or 9.5 percent excluding Downtown. The company linked the performance to wholesale price increases and continued subscriber growth, while market-share pressure moderated from the first half of 2026.

Core margins improve with Downtown

Adjusted EBITDA increased 9.0 percent at constant currency to 729 million euros. Excluding Downtown, Adjusted EBITDA grew 7.0 percent and the adjusted EBITDA margin expanded by 0.4 percentage points to 22.4 percent.

Recorded Music provided the main profitability support. Its adjusted EBITDA margin excluding Downtown expanded to 26.2 percent, helped by lower relative artist-and-repertoire spending and tighter marketing and overhead costs. Music Publishing and Merchandising remained weaker, limiting the overall margin improvement.

AI becomes a larger strategic issue

At the earnings call, UMG executives also sharpened their warnings about fully AI-generated music. Music Ally reported that CEO Sir Lucian Grainge said the volume of AI-generated tracks was growing faster than safeguards. UMG intends to push streaming platforms for clearer labelling and stronger action against infringing or deceptive content.

That stance adds a policy and licensing dimension to the group's growth strategy. The company said the challenge could dilute legitimate artists' economics and distort traditional measures of market share, making platform rules an important issue for future music-industry revenue.
