What investors should watch next

United Parcel Service raised its full-year outlook again on October 27 after third-quarter revenue and adjusted earnings exceeded analyst expectations. The company is heading into the holiday shipping season with stronger pricing and a leaner shipment mix, while investors are watching whether those gains can withstand lower package volumes.

UPS stock traded at 96.86 euros on Lang & Schwarz at 12:41 CET on Monday, November 2, 0.55 percent below the Xetra close of Friday, October 30. The Onvista UPS share page lists the relevant Xetra close at 97.40 euros.

UPS reported third-quarter revenue of 22.9 billion US dollars, up 6.7 percent from a year earlier. Adjusted diluted earnings per share reached 1.69 US dollars, ahead of the 1.63 US dollar analyst consensus cited by CNBC. Reported diluted earnings per share were 1.37 US dollars, compared with 1.55 US dollars a year earlier, while net income fell to 1.16 billion US dollars from 1.31 billion US dollars.

Pricing leads the operating recovery

The underlying mix improved in UPS's largest business. U.S. Domestic revenue increased 4.5 percent, driven by a 6.1 percent rise in revenue per package. International revenue advanced 7.1 percent, while Supply Chain Solutions revenue climbed 18.2 percent on growth in forwarding, logistics and healthcare. The supply-chain unit remained a weak spot for reported profit, with operating profit dropping to 92 million US dollars from 525 million US dollars.

UPS said the quarter included a 279 million US dollar net charge tied mainly to transformation costs and a goodwill impairment in Supply Chain Solutions. The company also recorded a gain on the sale of MD-11 assets. Its adjusted figures exclude selected items, so the stronger operating trend should be assessed alongside the reported charges.

Raised targets meet peak-season test

In its third-quarter earnings release, UPS lifted its full-year revenue outlook to approximately 92.6 billion US dollars from 91.2 billion US dollars. It now expects adjusted operating profit of approximately 8.75 billion US dollars, adjusted diluted earnings per share of approximately 7.28 US dollars and adjusted free cash flow of approximately 6.1 billion US dollars. Fourth-quarter revenue is expected to reach approximately 25.7 billion US dollars, with adjusted operating profit of approximately 3.3 billion US dollars.

Chief Executive Carol Tomé said UPS was entering the holiday season with the most automated and efficient network in its history. CNBC reported that nearly 70 percent of packages are expected to move through an automated process during the peak period. Domestic average daily volume is still expected to decline as UPS completes its reduction of lower-margin Amazon deliveries, making revenue quality and cost control more important than headline package growth.

For investors, the raised targets improve the earnings framework but do not remove execution risk. The holiday quarter will show whether premium shipments, automation and lower operating costs can compensate for fewer packages. The supply-chain profit decline is another issue to monitor as the company works through its broader turnaround.
