UPS stock outlook shifts as holiday volumes move from Amazon

- UPS expects lower US package volume during the fourth-quarter peak after reducing low-margin Amazon shipments.
- Management expects holiday online retail demand to rise and plans to add variable capacity as needed.
- Network automation and stronger premium shipments are central to the company's effort to improve operating leverage.
United Parcel Service is entering the 2026 holiday peak with a different volume mix after deliberately reducing low-margin shipments for Amazon earlier this year. Transport Topics reported on October 27 that CEO Carol Tomé expects fourth-quarter average daily US volume to decline year over year despite resilient consumer demand.
UPS stock traded at 95.78 euros on Lang & Schwarz at 11:50:51 CEST on Friday, October 30, 2026. The real-time quote of UPS stock is shown separately from the company's operating outlook.
Lower volume, stronger mix
Tomé said the reduction in Amazon shipments was part of a broader effort to strengthen the network and improve revenue quality. The initiative, known as Network Reconfiguration and Efficiency Reimagined, was completed on July 28 after UPS worked with Amazon to reduce lower-margin package flows.
The company still expects a strong seasonal period. Transport Topics reported that UPS's holiday online retail data points to growth of about 9% from the prior year, while forecasts from roughly 100 major US customers imply a 25% sequential increase in average daily volume as the fourth quarter progresses. The lower year-on-year company volume therefore reflects the customer mix decision rather than a broad retreat in seasonal demand.
Automation supports peak capacity
UPS says nearly 70% of packages now move through automated processes. Tomé said the network investments should allow the carrier to rely on fewer vehicle rentals and aircraft leases while adding variable capacity where demand requires it.
The operating data from the third quarter gives investors a mixed but strategically relevant picture. Revenue rose 6.7% year over year to 22.9 billion US dollars, while net income declined to 1.16 billion US dollars from 1.31 billion US dollars. Earnings per diluted share fell to 1.37 US dollars from 1.55 US dollars.
Segment performance also differed. US Domestic revenue increased 4.5% to 14.9 billion US dollars and operating profit rose 50.3% to 906 million US dollars. International revenue advanced 7.1% to 5.01 billion US dollars, with operating profit up 10.4% to 746 million US dollars. Supply Chain Solutions revenue gained 18.2% to 2.98 billion US dollars, but operating profit dropped 82.5% to 92 million US dollars.
Investor focus shifts to execution
For investors, the central test is whether higher-value shipments and automation can offset the loss of lower-margin Amazon volume. A successful peak season would support UPS's strategy of prioritizing premium growth, but the weaker Supply Chain Solutions profit shows that efficiency gains are not yet uniform across the portfolio.
The company is also introducing Protected Delivery, which requires a PIN before selected high-value shipments are released. That service adds another element to the peak-season offering as UPS seeks to improve the customer experience while managing capacity more selectively.
