Vale stock faces weaker iron ore economics after Proforma EBITDA fell 20%. Sales held up and 2026 output guidance was reaffirmed.

Operational pressure meets stronger metals

  • Vale kept its 2026 production guidance intact, with copper and nickel expected in the upper half of their ranges.
  • Iron ore sales increased despite lower production, while realized iron ore prices and cash costs moved against profitability.
  • Management pointed to improved Serra Norte production in October and continued investment discipline.

Vale reported a weaker third quarter on October 29, with lower iron ore prices and higher operating pressures weighing on profitability. In its 3Q26 quarterly results, the Brazilian miner said Proforma EBITDA fell 20 percent year over year to 3.5 billion US dollars.

Iron ore remained the main drag. Production fell 6 percent year over year, reflecting lower run-of-mine availability at Serra Norte. Sales nevertheless increased 0.3 percent, supported by stronger performance at S11D and the Southeastern system as well as inventory sales. The average realized price for iron ore fines fell 10 percent from both the previous quarter and the year-earlier period to 85.1 US dollars per tonne.

Costs pressure the iron ore business

Vale said its iron ore C1 cash cost rose 12 percent year over year to 23.1 US dollars per tonne, mainly because of the stronger Brazilian real and higher diesel costs. All-in costs reached 60.4 US dollars per tonne, up 21 percent, with freight adding to the pressure. The figures point to a tougher margin environment even though sales volumes remained resilient.

Capital expenditure totaled 1.3 billion US dollars, unchanged from a year earlier. Vale expects full-year investment to land at the lower end of its 5.4 billion to 5.7 billion US dollar guidance range. Recurring free cash flow reached 1.4 billion US dollars, while total free cash flow was 2.2 billion US dollars. Expanded net debt stood at 16.4 billion US dollars, 0.2 billion US dollars below the previous quarter.

Guidance holds despite iron ore setback

Vale reaffirmed all 2026 production guidance ranges. Management expects copper and nickel output to reach the upper half of their respective ranges, helped by stronger base-metals operations. Copper sales declined 4 percent because of the planned Sossego SAG mill rebuild, while nickel sales rose 16.1 percent year over year.

Chief Executive Gustavo Pimenta said the company was building a more flexible and competitive iron ore platform. Vale also said October daily production at Serra Norte had improved, supporting its expectation of a stronger finish to the year. For investors, the immediate test is whether that operational recovery can offset weaker iron ore pricing and higher costs.

Vale stock traded at 10.25 euros on Lang & Schwarz at 13:03 CET on Monday, November 2, 2026. The real-time quote of Vale stock is available separately.
