Visa and Tencent broadened their cooperation on October 29 with a memorandum of understanding covering cross-border payments, remittances, agentic commerce and enterprise AI. The announcement came from Tencent and outlines a proposed framework rather than a completed commercial rollout.

Under the plan, Tencent's TenPay Global platform and Visa Pay would support easier payments for travelers entering and leaving China. The companies will explore payment connectivity at participating merchants across the Weixin Pay and Visa networks, subject to applicable regulatory requirements. The initiative builds on their existing work serving international visitors to China.

Payments, remittances and AI

Visa and Tencent also intend to deepen their cooperation through Visa Direct. The service could make it easier for more overseas senders to transfer funds into the Weixin Pay ecosystem, extending the companies' cross-border money movement capabilities.

The partnership reaches beyond traditional payment processing. Tencent's Midas international payments platform and Visa already cooperate around gaming payments, joint marketing, money movement and risk management. The new framework would extend that relationship to Tencent's overseas AI businesses and explore payment experiences for AI-enabled services.

Visa and Tencent will also examine how Visa Intelligent Commerce could support AI agents that help eligible users discover, select and purchase products or services. The companies emphasize security, consumer control and trust, while the proposed initiatives remain subject to data-governance and security requirements. Tencent's announcement does not present the MoU as a launch timetable or a binding financial commitment.

For investors, the agreement gives Visa another potential route into China's cross-border payments activity and links its global network with Tencent's large digital ecosystem. The commercial impact will depend on regulatory approvals, participating merchants, adoption by travelers and the eventual scope of any services. The AI component offers longer-term optionality but remains exploratory.
