New track system targets urban rail needs

  • Voestalpine Railway Systems developed a prefabricated embedded-track system designed to reduce wear and simplify maintenance.
  • Tests in Graz and Vienna will compare operating forces with earlier simulations and guide further development.

Voestalpine Railway Systems presented its New Urban Track system on Wednesday, October 28, outlining a new approach to embedded tram tracks. The company says the system combines an optimized rail profile, prefabricated components and flexible fastening elements to address wear, noise and maintenance requirements. The details were published by voestalpine Railway Systems.

Design focuses on lower maintenance

The new system is intended for tracks embedded in concrete, where installation space is limited and rail replacement can be difficult. Rubber elements and a track damping system are used alongside the rail and fastening system. Voestalpine says the design supports stray-current insulation, vibration damping and faster access to the rail during maintenance.

Roman Weilguny, an R&D project engineer at voestalpine Rail Technology, said the new rail profile reduced both wheel and rail wear by 30 percent in calculations and simulations. The company stressed that the result still needs validation under operating conditions, so the figure is a development target rather than a reported field result.

Graz and Vienna host test sections

New Urban Track components have been installed on test sections in Graz and Vienna. Strain gauges are being used to measure forces generated by trams and to compare those readings with the simulations. The results are expected to support further refinement of the system and provide operators with information on durability, maintenance effort and operating economics.
