Westpac balances profit pressure and payouts

  • Fiscal 2026 statutory profit fell 1 percent while profit excluding notable items held broadly steady.
  • Loan growth and lower operating costs were offset by higher credit impairments and a narrower net interest margin.
  • The fully franked final dividend is scheduled for payment on December 21, 2026.

Westpac Banking Corporation reported a mixed fiscal 2026 result on Monday, November 2, after the year ended September 30. The bank's statutory net profit fell 1 percent to 6.8 billion Australian dollars, while profit excluding notable items was broadly unchanged at 7.0 billion Australian dollars, according to the Westpac ASX release.

Growth meets higher credit costs

Net operating income excluding notable items rose 1 percent to 22.7 billion Australian dollars, while operating expenses declined 1 percent to 11.8 billion Australian dollars. Pre-provision profit increased 4 percent to 10.9 billion Australian dollars.

Credit impairment charges more than doubled to 864 million Australian dollars from 424 million Australian dollars a year earlier. Net interest income rose 1 percent to 19.7 billion Australian dollars, but the net interest margin narrowed by 7 basis points to 1.87 percent.

Customer deposits increased 6 percent to 766.2 billion Australian dollars and loans rose 5 percent to 901.3 billion Australian dollars. Business lending grew 12 percent and institutional lending 18 percent, supporting balance-sheet expansion despite continued margin pressure.

Dividend date adds investor focus

Westpac declared a fully franked final dividend of 77 Australian cents per share, taking the fiscal-year total to 154 cents, 1 percent above the prior year. Westpac's Investor Centre says the final dividend is scheduled for payment on December 21, 2026.

The common equity tier one ratio stood at 12.5 percent, above the 11.25 percent target. Management expects interest rates to remain elevated into 2027, leaving earnings sensitive to funding competition, credit quality and monetary policy.

Westpac stock traded at 23.04 euros on Lang & Schwarz at 15:32 CET on Tuesday, November 3, 2026.
