ATX closes 2.65 percent lower as European banks sell off

Banks lead the decline
Erste Group fell 4.9 percent, BAWAG lost 3.8 percent and Raiffeisen Bank International dropped 3.9 percent. Andritz declined 4.3 percent, voestalpine fell 3.6 percent, Wienerberger lost 3.5 percent and AT&S slipped 2.9 percent, according to dpa-AFX via Boerse Online. OMV was the strongest major gainer, rising 2.4 percent.
The selling extended across European bank shares, while the ATX's decline ended a run of three consecutive gains. Lenzing fell another 3.1 percent after its recent capital increase announcement continued to weigh on the stock, the agency said.
Events ahead
The Federal Reserve's meeting minutes were scheduled for 8:00 p.m. CEST on October 7, followed by US consumer credit data at 9:00 p.m. CEST, according to the dpa-AFX calendar via finanzen.at. The minutes were also listed at 2:00 p.m. ET by InvestingLive.
On October 8, Germany's trade balance is due at 8:00 a.m. CEST and US initial jobless claims at 2:30 p.m. CEST. PepsiCo's third-quarter results and a Eurogroup meeting are also scheduled, according to dpa-AFX via finanzen.at.
