The BIST 100 fell 407 points, or 3.4 percent, to 11,663 points at 1:00 p.m. TRT on October 16. The decline followed MSCI's freeze on selected Turkish index changes and its warning about a possible market-status review by June 2027, MSCI said.

The benchmark opened at 11,896 points, down 174 points or 1.4 percent from Thursday's close of 12,070 points, Anadolu Agency reported. Financial leasing and factoring fell 6.4 percent, while banking and holding indexes dropped 1.9 percent and 3.2 percent, respectively, at midday, Sabah Finance said.

Why is the BIST 100 down today?

MSCI froze certain increases in foreign inclusion factors, share counts, new additions and upward size-segment moves for Turkish securities. The provider cited concerns about market integrity and coordinated trading involving funds linked to smaller companies.

MSCI said Turkey keeps its emerging-market classification for now. If sufficient progress is not evident by June 2027, it will consider consultation on a frontier-market or standalone-market reclassification, Reuters reported.

Financial leasing leads the BIST 100 sector losses

All sector indexes were lower at midday. Financial leasing and factoring recorded the steepest decline, while the 54.6 billion lira turnover showed active trading during the first half, Karar reported.

What comes next for the BIST 100

At 4:15 p.m. TRT on October 16, US industrial production is due with a 0.4 percent monthly consensus, after a flat prior reading. Capacity utilization is expected at 76.5 percent versus 76.3 percent previously, ForInvest said.
