Business Standard reported the closing level and change.
RBI decision drives decline
The RBI raised the repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50 percent, the first increase since February 2023, and changed its stance from neutral to calibrated tightening. Reuters said the central bank also signaled that further increases would depend on inflation and growth outcomes.
CNBC reported that retail inflation had reached 4.8 percent in August, above the RBI's medium-term target of 4 percent. The central bank's move came as inflation accelerated and oil prices added to the policy challenge.
Constituents and intraday move
The index reversed a two-session advance. It fell 599.09 points from the previous close to an intraday low of 72,468.72 before ending above that level, according to Rediff.
Twenty-six of the 30 Sensex companies declined and four advanced. Titan Company, Bharat Electronics, Asian Paints, Infosys, Larsen & Toubro and Adani Ports were among the major laggards, while Kotak Mahindra Bank, Bharti Airtel, ICICI Bank and Bajaj Finance gained, ThePrint reported.
Metals were among the weakest sectors, while public-sector banks outperformed. Moneycontrol also reported weakness in the rupee and continued attention to foreign fund flows.
Next session
The next trading session is Thursday, October 8, 2026. Investors will assess the market's response to the RBI's calibrated-tightening stance alongside inflation, crude oil prices and the earnings outlook, according to The Economic Times.
