Preview before the US market open: The Dow Jones Industrial Average starts Friday, November 6, 2026, after a sharp reversal of the post-election rally. The index closed Thursday at 51,523.06 points, down 1,833.06 points, or 3.44 percent, from Wednesday's close of 53,356.12. The figures and closing move were reported by Yahoo Finance.
Sharp reversal after election rally
Thursday's decline erased the Dow's gain from the previous session. The sell-off was broader than the technology sector: the S&P 500 fell 4.36 percent and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 5.52 percent, according to Morningstar. The Dow's closing level was its lowest since October 8, while the index remained above its 2026 low, the same report said.
CBS News attributed the market pressure to concerns that the change in congressional control could slow artificial-intelligence data-center construction and related investment. That explanation is an account of the reported market debate, not a confirmed causal relationship for the index move.
Futures remain under pressure
Before the cash session, US index futures pointed to a cautious start. CBS News reported early Friday that Dow futures were down 0.8 percent at 51,192.00, while S&P 500 futures were modestly higher. Separately, Yahoo Finance reported Dow futures down 0.7 percent in early trading. Futures are derivatives and do not represent the official Dow Jones Industrial Average cash index or its eventual opening level.
Employment data in focus
The key scheduled event is the October Employment Situation from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics at 8:30 a.m. Eastern time, or 2:30 p.m. Berlin time. The official BLS calendar lists the report for Friday, November 6. It will cover nonfarm payrolls, unemployment and other labor-market measures one hour before the New York opening bell.
Economists cited by Yahoo Finance expected October payroll growth of 65,000, compared with 29,000 in September, and an unchanged unemployment rate of 4.2 percent. The report may therefore become an important test for interest-rate expectations after Thursday's equity sell-off. A preview can frame the possible market focus, but it cannot determine how the Dow will trade during the session.
