The Euro STOXX 50 is set for another closely watched European session after closing Wednesday at 6,265.71 points, up 1.97 percent. The blue-chip index is calculated in real time from 09:00 to 18:00 CET, according to STOXX. At the configured midday slot, the Thursday session is therefore still under way rather than at its official close.
Strong prior session sets the tone
The previous session's advance followed a broad improvement in risk appetite. The finanzen.ch morning briefing attributed the positive backdrop to the US midterm election result, lower oil prices, falling government bond yields and supportive European company results. Banks were among the strongest European sectors on Wednesday, while oil and gas shares lagged as crude prices fell.
The move also had a clear company-specific component. Novo Nordisk raised its full-year outlook, while renewable-energy stocks benefited from expectations that the US election result could improve their policy environment. At the same time, technology shares were under pressure amid concerns about tighter scrutiny of artificial-intelligence companies and data-centre investment.
Asia highlights technology risk
Thursday's Asian trading offered a mixed signal for European equities. Yahoo Finance reported that the Nikkei 225 fell 1.79 percent to 61,077.90 as chip and artificial-intelligence shares weakened. The technology retreat reflects concern that a Democratic-led US Congress could increase oversight of AI development and data-centre construction. That may weigh on European semiconductor and technology constituents even if the broader index remains supported by banks, industrials and renewable-energy shares.
Policy decisions remain in focus
Thursday's calendar adds several potential volatility points. Eurozone producer-price data are scheduled for 11:00 Berlin time, followed at 13:00 by the Bank of England's rate decision. Market expectations cited by Reuters pointed to a 25-basis-point increase in Bank Rate to 4.00 percent. The decision and the guidance on future increases could affect European bond yields, sterling and interest-sensitive sectors.
For investors, the key question is whether the relief rally can broaden beyond banks and selected industrial shares. Lower energy costs and softer yields are supportive, but Asian technology losses and the day's policy announcements create counterweights. The next scheduled US data point is weekly jobless claims at 14:30 Berlin time, adding a further test for the market's interpretation of growth and interest-rate risks.
