- The Euro Stoxx 50 closed at 6,231.54 points on Thursday, November 5, 2026, down 0.55 percent.
- Technology and defense shares led the declines as investors reassessed artificial-intelligence investment and regulation risks.
- Higher oil prices and a Bank of England rate increase added to the pressure on European equities.
The Euro Stoxx 50 ended Thursday's session lower after giving up its early gains. The index closed at 6,231.54 points, down 34.17 points or 0.55 percent from Wednesday's close of 6,265.71. The closing level and percentage change were reported by Morningstar.
Technology shares reverse early gains
European equities initially benefited from a relief rally following the US midterm elections, but sentiment weakened as investors focused on the implications for artificial-intelligence investment. A Reuters report published by Yahoo Finance said technology stocks on the broader STOXX 600 fell 3.2 percent. Chip-related companies including ASML, Infineon and Soitec were among the notable decliners, while concern about stricter scrutiny of data-center construction added to the pressure.
Defense and energy add to pressure
Defense shares also weakened. Rheinmetall fell sharply after cutting its 2026 sales forecast for the second time in three months, according to the Reuters report. The sector decline compounded the technology sell-off and contributed to the broader retreat in European equities.
Oil prices moved higher during the session, with Brent crude rising more than 2 percent to 96.80 US dollars per barrel in the Reuters account. That rebound was a negative factor for Europe, which is a net energy-importing region. The market was also digesting the Bank of England's decision to raise its policy rate to 4 percent and its warning that another increase could be needed if the US-Iran conflict persists.
Index remains above recent levels
Despite Thursday's decline, the index remains above its close at the start of the week. The EURO STOXX 50 is the euro area's blue-chip benchmark, tracking leading companies across the region. STOXX identifies the index as a free-float market-capitalization-weighted benchmark with a maximum 10 percent weight for each constituent.
Investors will continue to weigh corporate earnings, the outlook for artificial-intelligence spending, energy prices and interest-rate expectations as the next European session approaches. Further coverage is available on the Euro Stoxx 50 topic page.
