- The Euro Stoxx 50 ended November 2 at 6,176.06 points, up 44.75 points or 0.73 percent.
- Falling oil prices and hopes for renewed Iran talks supported European equities, while investors also looked ahead to Apple earnings and the US midterm elections.
- The index has risen in five of the past six sessions but remains 5.73 percent below its August record close.
The Euro Stoxx 50 ended Monday's session at 6,176.06 points, gaining 44.75 points or 0.73 percent from the previous close. The closing level and daily change were reported by Morningstar, citing Dow Jones Market Data and FactSet. The gain followed a closing level of 6,131.31 points on Friday and largely reversed the previous session's decline.
Oil retreat supports European shares
A sharp retreat in oil prices improved the backdrop for energy-importing European economies. Reuters reported that investors took encouragement from hopes for a deal to end the Iran war, while continuing to monitor the consequences of the sharp fall in crude prices. Separate reporting by Anadolu Agency said travel and leisure shares benefited from the lower fuel-cost outlook, while energy shares declined.
Investors weigh political and technology risks
The recovery took place against a cautious global backdrop. Market participants were preparing for Apple's earnings and the US midterm elections on Tuesday, while the technology sector was still absorbing the effects of the previous week's sell-off. Reuters also pointed to ongoing concerns about the outlook for artificial-intelligence investment and euro-area economic momentum.
The session's advance was broad enough to lift the Euro Stoxx 50 to its strongest daily point and percentage gain since October 27, according to the Dow Jones data cited by Morningstar. The index nevertheless remained 5.73 percent below its record close of 6,551.22 points reached on August 11. It was up 6.64 percent year to date, according to the same data.
Recovery remains exposed to new signals
For investors, Monday's move indicates that lower energy prices temporarily eased a key inflation and margin concern, but it does not remove the main sources of uncertainty. Developments in the Iran conflict, the US election outcome and upcoming technology earnings can all alter expectations for growth, interest rates and corporate spending. The next market direction will therefore depend on whether the diplomatic hopes behind the oil retreat translate into a more durable improvement in supply expectations.
