Euro Stoxx 50 closed at 6,127 points on October 8, 2026, down 0.9 percent as banks weakened amid higher bond yields and rising oil prices, according to Morningstar. The index fell for a second consecutive session.
Banks and oil drive the decline
European banks dropped as euro-area government bond yields moved toward recent highs, while oil prices rose more than 3 percent on supply concerns in the Middle East, Reuters reported. The move renewed concern that higher energy costs will keep inflation elevated and weigh on economic growth.
Argenx fell 16 percent after the company discontinued a late-stage study of efgartigimod in adults with Sjogren's disease. An independent monitoring committee concluded that the trial was unlikely to meet its primary endpoint, Reuters said.
What comes next
On October 9, European markets will monitor the participation of ECB President Christine Lagarde in the Ecofin meeting in Luxembourg, according to the European Central Bank.
