FTSE MIB closes 1.4 percent lower as banks and oil pressure stocks

The FTSE MIB closed at 49,298 points on October 8, 2026, down 1.4 percent, as rising oil prices and renewed pressure in government bonds weighed on banks and technology stocks, Borsa Italiana reported.
Banks and technology lead declines
Financial stocks bore much of the pressure. Mediobanca fell 3.6 percent, Monte dei Paschi di Siena lost 2.6 percent, UniCredit dropped 2.9 percent, Intesa Sanpaolo declined 2.5 percent and Banco BPM fell 1.5 percent, according to Trading Economics. STMicroelectronics fell 3.3 percent, while Telecom Italia lost 2.4 percent.
Oil supports energy shares
Eni rose 2.7 percent, while Tenaris gained 1.3 percent as crude prices climbed. The Italian 10-year BTP yield stood at 4.6 percent and the spread over German Bunds narrowed to 111 basis points, ANSA reported.
What comes next
On Friday, October 9, Italy's industrial production for August is scheduled for release at 10:00 a.m. CET, with consensus pointing to zero percent month-over-month growth, according to Admiral Markets. ECB officials are also scheduled to speak, including Piero Cipollone at 12:15 p.m. CET and Isabel Schnabel at 3:30 p.m. CET, according to the European Central Bank.
