IBEX 35 sinks 0.99 percent as oil surge hits banks and airlines

IBEX 35 closed at 18,928.9 points on October 8, 2026, down 0.99 percent at 5:35 p.m. CEST as a sharp oil rally pressured banks, airlines and industrial stocks. Europa Press said the index reached an intraday low near 18,800 points.
Repsol was the strongest IBEX 35 stock, gaining 5.06 percent as Brent crude climbed 5.54 percent to USD 105.73. IAG fell 3.23 percent, Aena lost 3.00 percent and Banco Santander declined 2.85 percent, according to El Confidencial.
Oil and banks drive the decline
The IBEX 35 traded between 18,821.9 and 19,105.1 points, according to Bolsamania. Coverage linked the decline to higher oil prices, elevated sovereign bond yields and renewed Middle East tensions. Banking losses included Santander, Unicaja Banco, Banco Sabadell, BBVA and Bankinter.

On Friday, October 9, preliminary US Michigan consumer sentiment is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. ET, with a consensus estimate of 47.6 versus 48.1 previously, according to Investing.com. The release falls during European trading hours and will provide the next scheduled macro test for risk appetite.
