KOSPI closed at 6,009 points on October 14, losing 27 points or 0.4 percent after an early rally faded. The index fell as foreign selling returned to semiconductor shares ahead of U.S. inflation data, Yonhap reported.

CJ ENM was the strongest major mover, rising 6.9 percent. SK hynix fell 1.7 percent as chip stocks lost their early support.

Why did the KOSPI reverse lower?

The KOSPI opened at 6,062 points and climbed as high as 6,191 points before turning lower. It later reached 5,945 points before recovering near the close, according to Seoul Economic Daily.

Foreign investors sold a net 1.18 trillion won, while institutions bought 808.3 billion won. The index initially rose after New York Fed President John Williams said further monetary tightening next year was unnecessary.

Gains faded after ASML's revised sales outlook disappointed investors despite strong third-quarter results. The semiconductor equipment maker posted 11.7 billion EUR in sales, while its outlook renewed concerns about AI spending and memory-chip demand, Yonhap said.
