KOSPI closed at 5,768 points on October 19, up 100 points or 1.8 percent. The benchmark reversed a 3.2 percent opening slide as institutions bought beaten-down large-cap shares, Yonhap reports.
Hyundai Motor was the strongest major stock named in the closing coverage, rising 4.5 percent to 326,000 won. Samsung Electronics also gained 1.2 percent, while bargain buying helped the market recover from its opening low.
Why did KOSPI reverse its early loss?
The index opened at 5,488 points, down 179.64 points or 3.2 percent from the previous close. It then recovered to finish at its intraday high of 5,768 points after institutions bought a net 574.66 billion won.
The reversal followed a technology-led sell-off on Wall Street and concerns about whether heavy artificial intelligence infrastructure spending will generate sufficient returns. The Economic Times linked the early weakness to those concerns.
