The MOEX Russia Index ended the main trading session on Tuesday, November 3, at 2,441.99 points, down 0.55%. The decline followed an early recovery attempt that briefly lifted the index to 2,483.03 points before selling pressure returned. The closing level was reported by Prime using Moscow Exchange trading data.
Early gains give way to profit-taking
The session began with a positive reaction after the previous day's sell-off. The index gained about 0.5% at the opening of the main session, according to TASS. That rebound did not hold. Prime cited continued profit-taking after October's gains as a factor behind the reversal, while analyst Yekaterina Krylova of PSB expected the market to consolidate below the 2,500-point threshold.
Oil and geopolitics remain in focus
Market attention also remained on crude prices and the timetable for new diplomatic contacts. Interfax reported that the market was influenced by weak oil, with January Brent futures trading near USD 103 per barrel, as well as by investor caution ahead of a public holiday in Russia on November 4. The same report said the three-way Russia-US-Ukraine talks planned for Abu Dhabi had helped drive the initial morning move, but did not prevent the later correction.
For investors, Tuesday's price action points to a market still sensitive to energy prices and geopolitical headlines. The closing level returned the index to the 2,400-2,500 range after its sharp fall on November 2. The direction of the next move will depend on whether buyers can rebuild momentum above the 2,500-point area or whether profit-taking continues.
