Nikkei 225 closes 0.92 percent lower as chip rally faces profit-taking

Profit-taking hits chip shares
The decline followed a gain of 1.05 percent on October 6, when the index closed at 70,683.98 points. Xinhua said concerns about overheating after the move above 70,000 prompted profit-taking, while artificial intelligence and semiconductor shares that had led the recent advance came under pressure.
The Nikkei 225 finished near its session low after concentrated selling in high-priced technology names. Kabutan said Prime Market turnover reached 7.67 trillion yen, with 972 decliners, 526 advancers and 54 unchanged stocks.
Stocks and market breadth
Kioxia Holdings, Advantest and DISCO were among the semiconductor-related names under pressure, while Tokyo Electron, Fast Retailing and financial stocks also weakened, according to Kabutan. Kioxia Holdings was the most actively traded stock, and DISCO fell sharply. The broader TOPIX ended 0.70 percent lower at 4,154.11 points.
Next market cue
The Federal Reserve released minutes of its September 15-16 meeting at 2:00 p.m. ET on October 7, according to the Federal Reserve. Reuters said the minutes could clarify the debate behind the latest rate increase. The release came at 3:00 a.m. JST on October 8, before the next Tokyo session.
