The OMXS30 enters Thursday's Stockholm session from a firmer base after closing Wednesday at 3,311.67 points. The index gained 27.23 points, or 0.83 percent, from the previous session's close of 3,284.44. The figures are reported by Nasdaq's OMXS30 overview.
Banking shares support the advance
Wednesday's gains strengthened as the session progressed. According to Placera, Handelsbanken, Nordea, SEB and Swedbank rose between 2.6 and 3.3 percent. The move came as European financial shares participated in a broader sector advance.
The session was not uniformly positive. ABB fell 2.2 percent and Atlas Copco declined 1.5 percent, while Saab lost 2.4 percent. Boliden recovered 2.5 percent after weakness earlier in the week. These individual moves underline that the index's gain was driven by a mixture of sector rotation and company-specific developments rather than a broad advance across every large-cap constituent.
Reports remain a key stock driver
Company reporting also shaped the market. Placera reported that several smaller companies moved sharply after their results, with Asker, Rugvista and Orron among the gainers, while Lumen Radio, Nobia and Cheffelo came under pressure. The uneven reaction to earnings leaves the index sensitive to further company news even as the broader European tone improves.
Risk appetite sets the backdrop
For Thursday, the immediate backdrop is a stronger prior close and a calmer international risk climate. The market report attributed part of the improved sentiment to expectations that the outcome of the US midterm elections could bring greater stability. That backdrop may support cyclical and financial shares, but the previous session's mixed performance shows why index direction and individual stock performance can diverge.
The OMXS30 is a modified free-float market-capitalization-weighted index of 30 large and actively traded Stockholm-listed companies.
