The S&P/TSX Composite stood at 36,272 points at 11:46 a.m. ET on October 16, 2026, up 135 points or 0.4 percent. Energy and base metals led after Canada lost 68,000 jobs in September, the Canadian Press reported.

Why is the S&P/TSX Composite higher today?
Canada's September employment report showed a loss of 68,000 positions, against an expected gain of 9,200. The unemployment rate rose to 6.5 percent. The data reduced expectations for an October Bank of Canada rate increase, Money.ca reported.
Bank of Canada Governor Tiff Macklem also warned that persistent energy-price pressures complicate the rate outlook. The comments kept attention on oil, inflation and the central bank's next decision, Reuters reported.

The December crude contract fell 1.10 USD to 95.40 USD in late-morning trading. Energy still gained 1.2 percent, while materials advanced 1.0 percent as gold and silver prices supported mining shares, CP24 reported.
