- The Taiwan Weighted closed at 46,368.33 on October 29, down 667.25 points, or 1.42 percent.
- Heavyweight technology stocks led the decline, while mature-node foundries faced concerns over pricing competition and fourth-quarter utilization.
- Biotechnology and financial stocks gained, providing limited support as buying interest weakened after the previous session's rebound.
The Taiwan Weighted Index, or TAIEX, closed lower on Thursday, October 29, as investors reduced exposure to technology shares after the previous session's strong rebound. The index fell 667.25 points, or 1.42 percent, to 46,368.33, according to Focus Taiwan. Turnover was about NT$789.15 billion.
Technology shares lead the retreat
The decline was broad among the market's largest technology companies. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. fell 0.41 percent, while MediaTek lost 4.49 percent. Foxconn declined 1.39 percent, and Delta Electronics dropped 4.52 percent. The weakness was more pronounced in several foundry and optical-component stocks.
According to Taiwan News, concerns about global price competition and weaker fourth-quarter capacity utilization weighed on mature-node manufacturers. United Microelectronics closed at its daily limit down, while Vanguard International Semiconductor and Mosel Vitelic also fell sharply. Optical-component shares, including Largan Precision and Genius Electronic Optical, recorded sizable losses.
Defensive areas offer limited support
The index had fallen as much as 959.8 points during the session before narrowing its losses. Buying interest shifted toward defensive telecommunications shares, with Chief Telecom rising 7.23 percent, while Taiwan Mobile and Chunghwa Telecom also gained. Biotechnology advanced 1.1 percent and financial stocks rose 1.05 percent, according to the Taiwan News account.
Senior analyst Chien Po-yi, cited by Taiwan News, said the previous day's rebound had not been supported by sufficient trading volume. That left buying interest weak at higher price levels and kept the broader market momentum fragile. From an investor perspective, the session showed that strong recent gains did not by themselves establish a durable recovery; subsequent volume and the index's ability to hold technical support remain relevant market indicators.
The next Taiwan session will provide the next test of whether selling pressure continues to ease or whether the retreat broadens across cyclical technology shares. Further coverage of the Taiwan Weighted (TAIEX) is available on the index topic page.
