Reserve figures offer a larger cushion
In an October 30 update, Tether said its third-quarter attestation, prepared by BDO, covered the financial position as of September 30, 2026. The issuer reported USD 1.5 billion in net operating profit for the quarter and USD 4.5 billion for the first nine months of the year. The quarterly profit figure was consistent with the previous quarter, according to Tether.
The reported excess-reserve buffer rose to USD 7.95 billion from USD 4.1 billion at the end of the second quarter. Tether listed total assets of USD 191.451 billion and total liabilities of USD 183.496 billion at the reporting date. It also reported direct and indirect US Treasury bill holdings of USD 132.4 billion. These are quarter-end figures, not a real-time measure of reserves on November 7, and an attestation is not the same as a full financial-statement audit.
Freeze highlights issuer control
Tether's November 2 statement said the company froze more than USD 1.5 billion in USDT within 30 minutes of the October 29 Binance hack. Tether said the FBI attributed the attack to North Korea. The issuer also said that, as of October 31, it had helped freeze approximately USD 1.6 billion across 3,590 wallets for the US Department of Justice, the Secret Service and the FBI.
The action illustrates a defining feature of USDT: Tether can restrict transfers from identified addresses on supported networks. That capability may help investigators limit the movement of stolen funds, but a freeze is not the same as a recovery or a return to victims. For investors, the stronger reserve position supports redemption confidence in the issuer's own reporting, while the freeze underscores that USDT is not a permissionless asset in the same way as many decentralized cryptocurrencies.
