WIG 20 closes 1.59 percent lower as banks lead post-RPP selloff

The Warsaw Stock Exchange showed the index at that level and 18 of its 20 constituents lower at the end of the session.
Banks lead the decline
The sector was the main drag on the index. Parkiet reported that financial stocks weakened throughout the day and that the index fell mainly because of heavy losses among banks. The report said WIG 20 briefly lost 2 percent during the session.
Inwestycje.pl identified Pepco as the weakest constituent, down 3.33 percent to PLN 42.95, while PKO Bank Polski fell 3.27 percent to PLN 118.88. Only two constituents finished higher.
Rate decision and next event
Poland's Monetary Policy Council kept the reference rate at 3.75 percent on October 7. The decision was expected by economists, according to Polish Press Agency. TVN24 reported that the central bank also left its other policy rates unchanged.
National Bank of Poland Governor Adam Glapinski is scheduled to hold a news conference on October 8 at 3:00 p.m. CEST, according to Bloomberg.
