Project Suncatcher satellite reaches orbit
Google, Alphabet’s Google Services business, said on October 1 that its Project Suncatcher prototype satellite had launched into orbit aboard SpaceX’s Transporter-18 rideshare mission. The satellite was built in partnership with Planet, and Google said its team had confirmed contact and that it was operating as expected. Google Research said the mission will collect in-orbit data on how Google’s tensor processing units handle the physical stress of spaceflight, radiation and thermal extremes.
Research initiative highlighted in October roundup
In an October 2 recap of its September artificial-intelligence updates, Google described Project Suncatcher as a test of machine-learning hardware in orbit. The company said satellites in low-Earth orbit can access up to eight times more solar power than on Earth, a factor it is examining for potential long-term AI infrastructure. Google said the initial satellite test is intended to evaluate how its TPUs perform under real space conditions.
