NSW approves Hunter Valley continuation project
Glencore said on September 30 that the New South Wales Independent Planning Commission had approved the Hunter Valley Operations Continuation Project. HVO is independently managed for its joint-venture owners, with Yancoal holding 51 percent and Glencore 49 percent. The project aims to recover additional coal resources within existing mining tenements and extend the mine life from 2026 to 2045 at HVO North and from 2030 to 2042 at HVO South.
Federal approval remains outstanding
Glencore said the NSW decision followed a six-year regulatory assessment and that the project remains subject to federal environmental approval required by the end of December 2026 for operations to continue. The Guardian reported that the IPC said the project would be subject to export conditions tied to greenhouse-gas-reduction policies consistent with the Paris Agreement.
