Digital automatic coupler contract
In a September 17, 2026 release, Knorr-Bremse said it had won Europe’s first commercial equipment contract for Digital Automatic Couplers from ÖBB Rail Cargo Group. The technology is scheduled to enter commercial fleet operations starting in 2028 as part of the EU-funded PioDAC project. Knorr-Bremse said the project train will consist of 23 freight cars and one locomotive, with the company supplying couplers, electronic control units and sensors for digital monitoring.
The company also said automation and digitalization technologies for trains are a key growth area and that it targets annual original-equipment revenue potential in the triple-digit million-euro range in Europe. Knorr-Bremse reported approximately EUR 7.8 billion in worldwide revenue from its two divisions in 2025.
