Rail technology projects announced
On September 24, Knorr-Bremse announced with Trenitalia the first use of its digital electromechanical braking system in a passenger train operating in Italy. The company said the Brake-by-Wire system uses electrical transmission of the braking signal and electromechanical generation of braking force, replacing pneumatic and hydraulic components. Knorr-Bremse’s newsroom reported the development.
On September 17, Knorr-Bremse said it had won the first European commercial equipment contract for Digital Automatic Coupling from ÖBB Rail Cargo Group. The partners plan to test the technology from 2028 in the EU-funded PioDAC project, whose train is to comprise 23 freight cars and one locomotive. Knorr-Bremse’s newsroom said the contract marks a step toward commercial deployment of the technology.
