Recent rail technology developments
On September 24, 2026, Knorr-Bremse said it and Trenitalia had announced the first use of their digital electromechanical braking system in Italian rail operations. The company said the Brake-by-Wire system uses electric transmission of the braking signal and electromechanical generation of braking force through electric motors, replacing pneumatic and hydraulic components.
The issuer said the system includes telemetric monitoring and diagnostic functions, including predictive maintenance, from delivery. Knorr-Bremse added that the technology is intended to support lighter and more energy-efficient trains.
Digital coupling contract
In a September 17, 2026 release, Knorr-Bremse said it had won Europe’s first equipment contract for Digital Automatic Couplers from ÖBB Rail Cargo Group. The release said the technology will enter commercial fleet operations in 2028 as part of the EU-funded PioDAC project.
The project is scheduled to involve 23 freight cars and one locomotive. Knorr-Bremse said its equipment will include Digital Automatic Couplers, electronic control units and sensors for digital monitoring of vehicle functions and conditions.
