Student housing costs increased
MLP SE and the Institute of the German Economy presented the eighth MLP Student Housing Report on September 30, 2026. The report said quality-adjusted rents for student housing rose by an average of 2.6 percent in the first half of 2026 from the same period a year earlier. Over three years, rents increased by an average of 4.0 percent per year, according to the MLP Student Housing Report 2026.
The company’s report also said rents for apartments smaller than 40 square meters increased by 3.5 percent year over year. Shared-apartment rents rose by 2.3 percent, while furnished temporary apartments became 2.0 percent more expensive. The current BAföG housing allowance of EUR 380 fully covered the calculated rent of a 30-square-meter model apartment only in Chemnitz, the report said.
