Carbon-capture trial commissioned

Rio Tinto and Shougang Group have built and commissioned an industrial-scale carbon-capture trial facility for blast-furnace gas at Shougang’s operations in China, according to a Rio Tinto release.

The facility at Shougang’s Jingtang base can process up to 3,000 cubic meters of blast-furnace gas per hour and capture up to 10,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide each year. The project is part of a memorandum of understanding signed by Rio Tinto and Shougang in 2022 to develop technologies aimed at reducing emissions across the steel value chain.

The facility follows a smaller-scale carbon-capture installation commissioned in 2024. It has been integrated into Shougang’s ironmaking system for long-term trial and research, while the partners are exploring ways to convert captured carbon dioxide into syngas for reuse in steelmaking. Reuters also reported the commissioning and the facility’s stated processing and capture capacity.
