Starlink service expands overseas
In a September 10, 2026, release, SoftBank Corp said its SoftBank Starlink Direct service was scheduled to expand overseas on September 28. The initial expansion covered the United States, Canada and New Zealand, with the Philippines planned for the fall.
The service uses Starlink for direct satellite-to-smartphone communications. In areas without terrestrial mobile coverage and with an unobstructed path to the satellite, eligible customers can use text messaging and data communications through selected applications. SoftBank Corp said qualifying SoftBank, Y!mobile and LINEMO plans could use the service without an additional charge.
Fiber network trial
In a separate September 8 release, SoftBank Corp said it had completed a field trial using one optical transceiver to operate GPON, XGS-PON and 50G-PON on the same fiber with Nokia’s support. The company also said it confirmed transmission of a 100Gbps optical signal over existing subscriber fiber alongside GPON and XGS-PON signals.
