Unilever outlined packaging and climate initiatives in company updates published in September. The company’s latest disclosed developments include collaboration on paper-based flexible packaging and progress in reducing operational emissions.
Packaging consortium expands research effort
In a September 16, 2026 company update, Unilever said it is a founding member of the PaperFlex Consortium, alongside five other consumer-goods manufacturers. The group, convened by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and powered by (RE)SET, aims to develop and scale paper-based flexible packaging through collaborative research and trials. Unilever said it has more than doubled investment in packaging R&D in recent years and has a team of more than 60 materials scientists working on next-generation paper-based materials and barrier coatings.
Climate progress and operations
In a September 21, 2026 sustainability update, Unilever said it had reduced operational greenhouse-gas emissions by 77% from its 2015 baseline by the end of 2025. The company also reported that renewable electricity accounted for 88% of global consumption in 2025. It said almost 200 key suppliers, representing 40% of its raw-material scope 3 emissions, were included in its Supplier Climate Programme by the end of 2025.
