Unilever stock: Company joins PaperFlex consortium for packaging R&D

Unilever joined the PaperFlex Consortium as a founding member on September 16, 2026. The consortium brings together six consumer goods companies to accelerate research and development of paper-based flexible packaging as an alternative to traditional plastic films.
Joint packaging research
The Ellen MacArthur Foundation said the consortium will focus on markets where flexible plastic packaging is widely used and formal collection and recycling systems are limited. Members intend to conduct collaborative trials involving technologies such as biodegradable coatings and materials designed to deliver product protection, shelf life and consumer usability.
Unilever packaging development
Unilever said its work through the consortium aims to support recyclable and biodegradable packaging solutions. The company also reported that it has more than doubled its investment in packaging research and development in recent years and has a team of more than 60 materials scientists working on next-generation paper-based materials and barrier coatings. Unilever said it had assessed more than 3,000 emerging materials and technologies.
