Champion Iron stock faces a sharper cost outlook after credit downgrade
Published on 10/07/2026 at 01:29 | Editorial responsibility: Rafael Müller, Editor-in-Chief AD HOC NEWSChampion Iron stock was last at AUD 3.02 on the ASX on October 7, 2026, down 0.98 percent from AUD 3.05, as a fresh credit downgrade highlighted the miner's cost exposure. S&P Global Ratings cut Champion Iron's issuer credit rating to B+ from BB- on October 6, 2026.
Costs reshape fiscal 2027
S&P expects adjusted EBITDA to fall to CAD 290 million in fiscal 2027 from CAD 504 million in fiscal 2026, a decline of 42 percent based on the reported figures in its forecast table. The agency links the pressure to higher freight and fuel costs, while the rating outlook remains stable.
The same assessment puts adjusted EBITDA margins at 17 percent to 18 percent in fiscal 2027, compared with 28.5 percent in fiscal 2026. That forecast makes logistics and operating leverage the key variables for Champion's near-term earnings profile.
Quarterly loss tests the reset
Champion's latest reported quarter also shows the pressure on profitability. In Q1 fiscal 2027, revenue fell 8.5 percent from the comparable period to CAD 356.9 million, while the company reported a CAD 41.5 million net loss and a CAD 0.075 loss per share, according to Simply Wall St.
The operating case still rests on higher-grade products from the Direct Reduction Pellet Feed project and on the broader portfolio created by the Rana Gruber acquisition. S&P says the DRPF ramp-up could support a rebound in adjusted EBITDA to CAD 540 million to CAD 560 million in fiscal 2028 and fiscal 2029.
Targets remain above the share price
A consensus published by Investing.com lists a Buy view from 6 analysts, an average 12-month target of AUD 4.708, a high target of AUD 6.75911093 and a low target of AUD 3.35202243. The average target lies 55.9 percent above the AUD 3.02 share price.
Recent broker activity is more mixed. FNArena reported that UBS initiated coverage with a Buy rating and an AUD 4.15 target, while Macquarie cut its target to AUD 4.80 from AUD 6.80. The contrast is clear: product quality supports the upside case, but freight, fuel and leverage limit the margin for error.
Champion Iron stock stays near its yearly low
The ASX price of AUD 3.02 was above the October 7, 2026 session low of AUD 3.02 and below the session high of AUD 3.04. Its 52-week range is AUD 2.97 to AUD 6.69, placing the stock AUD 0.05 above the yearly low.
