- Coal India reported its strongest October operating performance, with supplies and production reaching monthly records.
- Power-sector deliveries rose as India works to strengthen fuel availability ahead of the next peak-demand season.
- Coal India is expanding mining infrastructure while pursuing solar, gasification and critical-minerals projects.
Coal India reported record October operating performance on November 1, 2026, as total supplies crossed 70 million tonnes for the first time. The state-owned miner said production also reached a new October high, strengthening its role in India's effort to secure fuel for thermal power plants.
October Sets New Operating Benchmarks
According to Coal India's press release, total supplies reached 70.3 million tonnes in October FY 2026-27, 19 percent above the same month a year earlier. Deliveries to the power sector reached 57.1 million tonnes, also a company record, while average power-sector railway loading climbed to 310 rakes per day.
Coal production reached 67.2 million tonnes, up from 56.38 million tonnes in October FY 2025-26. Coal India said the performance came despite unseasonal rainfall, festival disruptions and the impact of a cyclone. The figures matter for investors because higher dispatches can support electricity generation, while the emphasis on power customers may constrain supplies to other industrial users.
Demand And Supply Remain In Balance
The operating update comes as India seeks to rebuild coal inventories at power stations before the next summer demand season. Coal India's September update set production and supply targets of 815 million tonnes and 850 million tonnes, respectively, for FY 2026-27. Meeting those targets will depend on mining conditions, railway availability and the company's ability to expand evacuation capacity.
Coal India also reported H1 FY 2026-27 capital expenditure of 79.66 billion Indian rupees, 27 percent above the prior-year period and 109 percent of its planned outlay. Spending is directed toward mine infrastructure, land, heavy equipment and diversification projects.

Coal India's Business And Position
Coal India is a Government of India-owned coal mining company headquartered in Kolkata. It operates through subsidiaries across eight Indian states and runs open-cast, underground and mixed mines, supplying power generators and other industrial customers.
The company is India's dominant domestic coal producer and has a national operating footprint rather than a regional mining niche. Alongside thermal coal, it is investing in evacuation infrastructure, solar power, coal gasification and critical minerals as it develops additional energy businesses.
Its scale gives Coal India a central role in India's electricity fuel chain, but the business remains exposed to monsoon conditions, rail logistics, regulation and the long-term transition away from coal.
