- Contact Energy completed its acquisition of Manawa Energy on July 11, 2025.
- Manawa's generation assets now form part of Contact Energy's New Zealand power portfolio.
- Investors must assess Manawa's contribution through Contact Energy rather than as a standalone listed company.
Contact Energy completed its acquisition of Manawa Energy on July 11, 2025, ending Manawa's status as a standalone listed company. Simply Wall St reports that the transaction included NZD 1.12 in cash and 0.5830 new Contact Energy shares for each Manawa share.
A completed power-sector takeover
The deal followed Contact Energy's September 2024 scheme agreement and received the required regulatory, shareholder and court approvals before completion. Manawa's website now states that the company is part of the Contact Energy group, confirming that the former target has moved into the acquirer's operating structure.
For investors, the key change is analytical rather than a new trading signal: Manawa's assets and operating performance must be considered through Contact Energy's results. The completed transaction also means that historical Manawa figures are not a direct guide to a currently independent equity valuation.
Investor focus shifts to integration
Contact Energy operates generation and retail businesses in New Zealand across wholesale, commercial, industrial and mass-market customers. The integration places Manawa's renewable generation assets within a broader platform that also includes electricity, gas, broadband and mobile services.
Future investor attention is likely to center on how effectively Contact converts the acquired asset base into earnings, cash flow and renewable output. That assessment belongs to Contact Energy, whose shares remain the listed vehicle for exposure to the combined business.
Contact Energy's competitive position
Contact Energy is a New Zealand energy generator and retailer with wholesale and retail operations. It sells electricity to wholesale, commercial and industrial customers and provides energy and communications services to mass-market customers.
It competes with other New Zealand utilities including Mercury NZ, Genesis Energy and Meridian Energy. Contact is positioned as a diversified generator-retailer, while the former Manawa business was more closely associated with renewable generation assets before the acquisition.
Manawa Energy's website says the company is now part of Contact Energy, so the relevant competitive comparison is the enlarged Contact platform rather than an independent Manawa business.
